Bangladesh Squad for Ireland Series 2023 Announced

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced the 15-member squad for the three-match series against Ireland 2023. Experienced cricketer Mahmudullah Riyad is not in the team in this series to be held in England. They haven’t even played at home against the Irish before.

21-year-old left-arm pacer Mohammad Mrutyunjoy Chowdhury has been called up as a new face in the ICC World Cup Super League series. Shariful Islam and Taijul Ahmed returned to the team apart from the new face Mritunjoy Chowdhury. Besides, Taskin Ahmed, who was injured before the Test match against Ireland at home, has been rested. However, Nasum Ahmed was dropped from that series.

Match three of the Super League will be held in Chelmsford, England. Mahmudullah Riyad did not have a place in the team in this series. He was also left out of the team for the last ODI series against Ireland at home. The three-match ODI series between Bangladesh and Ireland will start on May 9. The next two ODIs of the series will be on May 12 and 14 respectively.

The Bangladesh team will leave Dhaka for England to play a series against Ireland soon after Eid-ul-Fitr. On Sunday (April 9), the chief selector of the Tigers, Minhajul Abedin Nannu, said that considering the condition of England, the team has already been selected and submitted to the board, the rest is only for the announcement.

Minhajul Abedin Nannu said, “The conditions there (England) are very challenging. Considering that and after discussing it with the team management, the team has been formed. We have already prepared the team and submitted it to the board.”

Bangladesh team is now very experienced and can adapt quickly to any condition, he said, “Our team is now very experienced. Has enough ability to quickly adapt to any condition. There will be challenges, I hope you can adapt quickly.”

With India ahead of the World Cup, this year’s Asia Cup will also be held in the ODI format. Before the Asia Cup, Bangladesh has only two more series. Apart from the Ireland series in England, Bangladesh will play another series against Afghanistan at home.

In both series, the focus of selectors is Asia Cup and India World Cup. Basically, the selectors will give the India World Cup team based on the performance of the team in the Asia Cup after the two series. Minhajul Abedin also gave that glimpse on Sunday.

He said, “We have made a pool of cricketers. We have given opportunities to some players there. Hopefully, I can make the World Cup team before the Asia Cup.”

Rumor has it that after the arrival of Chandika Hathurusingha, there is frustration among the team’s senior cricketers that they may drop out of the team at any time. Even in the World Cup, you may not get a chance in the team. Meanwhile, the rumors have been strengthened by the absence of senior cricketer Mahmudullah Riyad for the ODI series against Ireland at home.

However, the chief selector is reluctant to accept the omission. This was done to see the performance of the youngsters for the needs of the team. He said, “All types of performance of the players will be considered. But no one will be hidden from view.”
