South Africa VS New Zealand CWC19 Match 25 Result
New Zealand won the toss and elected to bowl first in the 25th match of ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.
Kane Williamson produced a controlled batting master class to lead New Zealand to a tense four-wicket victory over South Africa at Edgbaston ending Proteas’ World Cup semi-final hopes. The Black Caps skipper kept his composure at the end of the match that didn’t last until the end of the game. He hoisted Andile Phehlukwayo for a huge six on midwicket to give him a majestic century. He sliced the next ball for four as New Zealand reached their goal of 242 with three balls to spare in a game reduced to 49 due to a wet outfield.
Williamson was helped by Colin de Grandhomme’s superb 60 out of 47 balls on a difficult pitch after the Kiwis dropped to 137 for five. Earlier, Williamson had tried his luck when South Africa had not seen their advantage. The wicketkeeper, Quinton de Kock, had taken control of the game. He was in Imran Tahir’s bowling alley at the time. The win puts New Zealand at the top of the 10-team preliminary round of the competition in England and Wales, while South Africa are third from bottom after just one win in six games.
Earlier, Martin Guptill, who guided New Zealand towards his goal with minimal noise, trod his stumps to cause a mini-collapse. Two outs later, New Zealand slipped to 74-3 when Ross Taylor tickled Chris Morris’ and De Kock grabbed the back. Tom Latham’s dismissal left them in trouble at 80-4. Jimmy Neesham 23 runs stabilized the ship with his skipper but when he came out, New Zealand was back in trouble.
De Grandhomme came to the rescue of New Zealand, hitting positively and going up to his fifty balls out of 39 but he was caught in the depths at 60 by South African captain Faf du Plessis of Lungi Ngidi in the penultimate. Hashim Amla scored 55 runs on 83 balls, but Van der Dussen’s 67 goals were better than a run to the ball. During his heats, Amla became the fourth South African to reach 8,000 races in international matches.
