Sarfraz Ahmed Likely to Retain as ODI Captain of Pakistan Team
Speculation about the captaincy of the current Pakistani captain Sarfraz Ahmed for ODI may be coming to an end. The current captain Sarfraz expected to resume leadership responsibilities in the series of limited-overs ODI against Sri Lanka, either end of this month.
However, the final decision expected to make with input from the new head coach of the national cricket team. Pakistan’s Test hitter, Azhar Ali, considered the favourite to replace Sarfraz as the Captain on the Test side.
According to details, Pakistan’s inability to reach the semi-final stage of the 2019 International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup resulted in the expulsion of former head coach Mickey Arthur and support staff from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
There was widespread speculation about Sarfraz’s removal from the leadership role after the 2019 ICC World Cup. However, according to the sources, this is not the case. The current captain expected to continue in the same role in the one-day international series (ODI) and Twenty20 against Sri Lanka.
According to the sources, PCB officials had reflected on the candidates for the captaincy position. However, officials believed that no player on the current team eligible for responsibility. The multifaceted Imad Wasim plagued by several fitness problems, while many players lack the experience of leading a team.
The contribution of the next expected head coach, Misbahul Haq, will also be taken into account in terms of captaincy. Sarfraz’s tenure as the country’s test captain is probably coming to an end. The Pakistan team is currently in seventh place in the Testing rankings and a new action plan for the future likely to be prepared.
Azhar Ali had previously captained the side; however, his term ended in unsatisfactory circumstances. Now it feels like the logical contender for the captain’s job on the Test side. The test hitter also led aside in preseason camp.
PCB President Ehsan Mani will take the final decision on the position of captain. However, the president does not seem to be in favour of the change.
