Misbah, Waqar, Frontrunner for Pakistan Coaching Post
Former Captain’s Misbah-ul-Haq and Waqar Younis appear to be the leading candidates for the position of the head coach and bowling coach of the Pakistan national team, respectively. Misbah and Waqar ready to lead Pakistan Coaching post. Interviews with the candidates for the head coach position conducted Thursday in which Misbah, former test opener Mohsin Hasan Khan and previous Australian batter Dean Jones (via video link) interviewed.
According to Dawn’s report, both Mohsin and Dean Jones may not succeed for different reasons. The age factor in Mohsin’s 65-year-old case could go against him, while Jones could miss the bus because he was foreign, as the experiment with foreign coaches has not been good for Pakistan in the past.
On Friday, interviews for the bowling coaching position are likely to be conducted by the five-member panel of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
Waqar, who previously served as Pakistan’s head coach, also appeared for the position of a bowling coach. Mohammad Akram withdrew his name in favour of Waqar, thus increasing Waqar’s chances.
However, former Courtney Walsh of the West Indies, who is likely to be interviewed via a video link, could be a competition for Pakistan’s traditional pacemaker.
However, PCB is wary of the fact that dealing with Waqar has not been easy in the past, as he left the position as head coach twice (in 2011 and 2016) and as a bowling coach in 2007 under controversial circumstances.
His relationship with current Skipper Sarfraz Ahmad was also not ideal.
Pakistan cricket team training positions have been vacant since PCB decided not to extend the contracts of Mickey Arthur and others, following the Pakistan Cricket team’s poor performance at the 2019 World Cup.
