Kyle Abbott takes 17 wickets to send record tumbling

Former South Africa test player Kyle Abbott took 17 wickets in the Hampshire County Championship victory over Somerset and created the record for the best figure in first-class cricket in 63 years.

Abbott’s 17-86 comeback is best for Hampshire and best overall since English spinner Jim Laker took 19-90 against Australia in 1956.

Abbott, 32, had taken 9-40 in the first innings and played his incredible fast bowling with a remarkable 8-46, the first 17-wicket tour of the Championship in 80 years.

Somerset, who needed 281 to win, was eliminated by just 144 in his second inning on Wednesday.

The 136-runs defeat, Somerset’s third defeat of the season, means they must beat their title rivals Essex at Taunton next week if they want to win the Championship for the first time.

Essex is on the brink of victory against Surrey.
