Kusal Mendis fell asleep at the time of the accident
Police arrested Sri Lankan cricketer Kushal Mendis this morning (July 5). He was arrested in a fatal accident in Panadura. According to the CCTV footage and investigations, Kusal Mendis fell asleep at the time of the accident. Kusal Mendis will be produced before a magistrate in court tomorrow. Earlier, he had given a preliminary statement to the police.
A 64-year-old cyclist died in that accident. The deceased cyclist is a resident of Gorakpola in Panadura. The accident took place at around 5.30 pm local time in Panadura, 13 km from the Haridwar area. Police spokesperson SSP Jalia Senaratne told Lankan media about the incident.
It is learned that Kusal Mendis was returning from the wedding of a Sri Lanka Cricket Board official with his teammate Avishka Fernando. Mendis said he fell asleep at the time of the accident. He said that he left home with several friends at the end of the program. However, he was not drunk while driving.
Test and ODI captain Dimuth Koranaratne and T20 captain Lasith Malinga were present at the Panadura police station to see Kusal Mendis. Kusal will remain in police custody tonight.
Kusal Mendis, 25, has played 44 Tests, six ODIs, and 26 T20Is for Sri Lanka. His runs in three formats are 2995, 216, and 464 respectively. Kusal Mendis, the owner of 9 international centuries, has 33 fifties in three formats.
Kusal has come very close to two double centuries in his Test career. In 2016, Galle was dismissed for 194 runs against Bangladesh. He was dismissed in Chittagong in 2016 for 196 runs. Mendis scored one ODI century against Bangladesh (in Dambulla in 2016).
