Greed can’t be cured, Says Sunil Gavaskar on match-fixing

With the threat of match-fixing once again Sunil Gavaskar underlined the slippery ground on which he was stepping the game, says there is no cure for greed. The Tamil Nadu Premier League and the Karnataka Premier League have been in the news for all the wrong reasons as they embroiled in fixing and betting controversies.

-Gavaskar on Match Fixing-

“Greed is something that no amount of education, guidance, seminars with anti-corruption boys is going to help. Greed is a human thing; the best of societies, the most developed of societies still have criminals. In cricket, you will also always have a strange person who will be influenced by greed. (Could) Be some other reason that could force you to do something. That’s something I don’t think I can control,” Gavaskar said according to Cricmela.

However, he noted that the advancement in technology has ensured that cheaters have nowhere to hide.

“I imagine that sometimes circumstances make a player think ‘I can get away with it’.’ However, you can’t escape. Because TV, every little aspect so covers it… you’ll be exposed as if you’ve done something wrong.”

Although cricket leagues are more prone to corruption, the former Indian captain believes that these tournaments should always find people’s support as they reinforce Indian cricket.

“Look at the talent you’ve provided from the districts. For example, the Karnataka Premier League, the number of people who have come from the interiors that not even the best Scouts in Karnataka could have seen otherwise.”

‘Same with TNPL and all the other leagues that are happening (in India). I think these leagues are very, very good. It’s giving more talent to Indian cricket, a talent that wouldn’t otherwise have exploited,” he added.
