Essex Wins the Vitality Blast T20 2019 Title
The Essex Eagles made a remarkable last-ball finish to wins their first Vitality Blast 2019 T20 title last night, and their captain, Simon Harmer, was omnipresent to thank in every respect.
Versatile player Harmer took three wickets for giving 16 runs, including Moeen Ali’s wicket’s, while Essex limited defending champion Worcestershire Rapids to 145 for nine after winning the throw and bowling on the delicate Edgbaston surface.
Essex’s title ambitions seemed disproportionate when Moeen quickly sacked Ryan Ten Doeschate and Dan Lawrence, leaving them to fight at 82-5 before the end of the 14th. But Ravi Bopara, who made 36 out of 22 balls, revived his hopes of leaving Essex and needs 12 in the final over.
They made only six runs off the first four balls against Wayne Parnell before Harmer slammed his compatriot to score successive limits, propelling Essex to a thrilling victory.
“We said at the beginning of the competition that we had always talked about the county championship and that we were just happy to be part of the T20, but I wanted it. It was one of those days when everything went on, my bowling and my stick. It’s a special night”.
