CPL 2019 Records aplenty as Patriots pull off second-highest successful T20 chase
Records dropped at Warner Park when St Kitts and Nevis Patriots chased 242 in a high-scoring match against Jamaica Tallawahs in a Caribbean Premier League match for the second most successful chase in T20 history on Tuesday.
Opening batsmen Devon Thomas (71) and Evin Lewis (53) led a flying start in a whirlwind of 85-runs in 5.3 overs for Patriots in pursuit. Laurie Evans and Fabian Allen extended the great start before Tallawahs’ Oshane Thomas (4/53) took four wickets in seven overs, three of them in an over-trigger of a mini-collapse.
Thomas eliminated Evans (41), Thomas, Captain Carlos Brathwaite (0) and Jason Mohammed (0) reducing the Patriots from 161 to 177/5.
Allen and Shamarh Brooks added more 50 runs for the sixth wicket to get them back on track. Allen finished the chase with six-quarters of Andre Russell’s consecutive deliveries when the Patriots won their first game of the season with four wickets and seven to-spare.
Previously, Chris Gayle broke a 22-century T20 record to help Tallawahs reach the highest score in CPL history that was held for a couple of hours before Patriots broke it.
Gayle snug seven-fours and smoked ten sixes in a 62 of 62 balls while Tallawahs were posting 241-4 after being put to the at-bat. After losing opening partner Glenn Phillips (8) at a low score, Gayle set a record 162 runs, the highest for any wicket in CPL history.
Walton was equally devastating by hitting three fours and eight sixes on his 36 balls out of 73 and was out late at the innings, at the 18th, while Gayle later left.
However, the effort was overtaken by their opponents who combined with them to match the record for the most sixes in a T20 -37.
Brief scores by Both Teams: St Kitts and Nevis Patriots 242/6 (Devon Thomas 71, Evin Lewis 53; Oshane Thomas 4/53) beat Jamaica Tallawahs 241-4 (Chris Gayle 116, Chadwick Walton 73; Fabian Allen 2/30) by four wickets
