Bangladesh started with a three-match ODI series win against visiting Sri Lanka. The Tigers won the first ODI of the series by 33 runs at home. Bangladesh went ahead 1-0 in the three-match series with this victory.

Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat in the first match of the series on Sunday (May 23), scoring 256 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in 50 overs. Openers Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah Riyad scored 50 runs for the team.

Batting in reply, Bangladesh bowlers were bowled out for 224 with 11 balls to spare. Mehedi Hasan Miraj took a maximum of 4 wickets with 30 balls in 10 overs for Bangladesh.

Shakib was batting smoothly to be set on the wicket with Tamim. Captain Tamim was trying to increase the speed of the run. Bangladesh got 40 runs on the scoreboard at the end of 10 overs. However, Shakib lost his wicket in the 13th over. Shakib, who was caught on a long-on by Sri Lankan spinner Danuska Gunatilka for a six, hit 15 off 34 balls with two fours. He added 36 runs off 64 balls with Tamim.

Mushfiqur Rahim became Shakib’s partner at the crease after Shakib’s dismissal for the second wicket for 43 runs. The duo started repairing the innings. Tamim-Mushfiqur’s bat was also increasing the team’s score. Tamim completed his 51st half-century in his 214-match ODI career in the 22nd over. Tamim’s farewell bell rang in the next over after getting a half-century off 6 balls.

Sri Lanka’s off-spinner Dhananjaya de Silver missed the delivery line and Tamim fell into the leg-before trap. Tamim took the review to prove the decision of the umpire who was on non-strike wrong. However, the review could not save Tamim.

Mohammad Mithun came to the wicket after Tamim’s farewell. Mithun gave the wicket to De Silva with the first ball. He became leg before sweeping the paddle. Mithun could not live with reviews like Tamim. As a result, the Tigers lost two wickets in a row and also lost two reviews.

Bangladesh lost 4 wickets for 99 runs in 23 overs. Large pairs were needed to relieve that pressure. In this situation, Mushfiqur got along with Mahmudullah Riyadh, who handled such a situation in many matches. Considering the situation, Mushfiqur and Mahmudullah continued to play carefully.

Mushfiqur-Mahmudullah’s bat touched Bangladesh’s score in the 43rd over. In the first ball of the 44th over, Mushfiqur-Mahmudullah broke the tie with Sri Lankan left-arm spinner Lakshan Sandakan. Mushfiqur, who was out for a reverse sweep, made 84 off 8 balls with 4 fours and 1 six. Mahmudullah added 109 off 122 balls for the fifth wicket. Mushfiqur scored 56 off 56 balls and Mahmudullah 47 off 6 balls.

Mahmudullah hit his 24th half-century in his 195-match ODI career off 60 balls in the over after Mushfiqur was dismissed. Mahmudullah’s goal was to survive till the end of the innings after a half-century. However, de Silva did not allow that to happen. He took the wicket of Mahmudullah in the first ball of the 47th over. Mahmudullah made 54 off 6 balls with 2 fours and 1 six.

When Mahmudullah was out, Bangladesh scored 230 runs. There were 16 balls left in the innings. In the end, Afif Hossain’s unbeaten 28 off 22 balls with 3 fours and Mohammad Saifuddin’s unbeaten 13 off 9 balls with 2 fours gave Bangladesh a strong lead. Sri Lanka’s De Silva took 3 wickets for 45 runs.

Perera started repairing the innings with Kushal Mendis. However, they could not go far. Shakib picked up Mendis’ wicket in his second over. After Pereira’s departure, the mirage ignited. He took 3 wickets for Sri Lanka at the interval of 6 runs. Perera returned with 30 runs, Dhananjay de Silva with 9, and Asan Bandara with 3 runs. With the sixth wicket falling for 102, Sri Lanka was knocked out of the match.

As the last Sri Lankan batsman, Mostafiz stopped Dushmantha Chamira by 5 runs and stopped Sri Lanka by 224 runs. Bangladesh’s Miraj took 4 wickets and Mostafiz took 3 wickets.
