Australia Hungry to Seal Ashes Test Series 2019
Tim Paine described the fifth Ash Test as an Australian “grand final” which is aiming for his first series victory in England since 2001. Tourists have already retained the ballot box after winning the fourth Test at Old Trafford to take a 2-1 lead, but Captain Paine said they were ‘very hungry’ to finish the job by winning the Ashes test series 2019 at the Oval.
Versatile player Mitchell Marsh has been recalled in place of Travis Head in the 12-man squad to ease the workload of Australia’s impressive attack.
“We’ve already talked about it a lot (the last test),” Paine said on “We came here to win the ashes, not just to keep them. Last test match result was brilliant, and we played very well, but all the guys are fully aware that this test match is more prominent than this one. This is our grand finale. We want this test as much as any other test we’ve played in this Ashes Test series 2019. “
Australia bounced back to win the fourth game of the series at Old Trafford after Ben Stokes inspired England to a dramatic one-stop-and-off victory in Headingley’s third try.
Root’s captaincy came under scrutiny after England’s failure to recover the ashes, but Paine said Australia did not underestimate him.
“We know That Joe Root is a fantastic cricketer,” he said. “I sometimes don’t understand why it is subject to such monitoring, but it is he’s going to come strong, and he’s looking to bounce back this week, so he’s a huge wicket for us, as he always has been.”
Paine added that Marsh’s inclusion was intended to ease the workload associated with his impressive speed attack and that he had complete confidence in his strike.
“We just wanted a little bit more depth in the team to cover what looks like an excellent wicket and to be able to take care of our big fast bowlers,”
